Fault trees are a widely used tool in industry to analyse system

dependability. A major drawback, however, is that fault tree analysis

assumes that maintenance is performed as specified. The Current trend

in maintenance is towards risk-based maintenance, which requires a

detailed understanding of how maintenance affects system reliability.

This presentation explains our new method, called fault maintenance

trees, that integrates maintenance into fault trees so as to analyze the

effects of different maintenance strategies and help find an optimal

balance between risk of failure and cost of maintenance
